The Beneth’hill Café is 5 minutes
walk from the passenger foot ferry operated by Orkney Ferries
daily from
Stromness to the North of Hoy. Opened in July 2007, the café serves
simple quality food and drink, specialising in local produce such as Orkney
Crab, oatcakes and local beers. There is also good home-made soups and
warming coffee, hot chocolate and a range of teas for cold walkers or even a peedie dram of Highland Park to revive those aching bones! Ice cream and
milk shakes for those hot days and plenty of Scottish national soft drinks,
Ginger Beer, Irn Bru and Vimto to keep the energy levels up, also Orkney
fudge and home-bakes to sustain you on your hike up the Ward Hill and lots
of other good things.
The name Beneth’hill comes from
the name of the crofting township, Beneath-the-Hill which stretches from the
Whiteglen to Moaness. Older folk in the area pronounced the name by running
all the words together, hence Benethill. Other townships in the north
of Hoy are Whaness and Braebister. The Benth’hill café is situated in a
completely rebuilt former crofthouse.
